Mosquito
Author: Peter G Jupp

This handbook enables mosquito workers to identify the 176 culicine and 2 toxorhynchitine mosquitoes, which occur in Southern Africa.

The northern boundary of southern Africa is here defined as the northern boundary of Namibia, eastwards to its junction with the Zambezi River and thereafter following the course of this river to the Indian Ocean.

In southern Africa 22 arboviruses have been isolated from these mosquitoes of which 10 are known to cause illness in humans and in some instances also livestock.

The book is generously supplied with black and white drawings and also includes 5 beautiful colour plates to facilitate identification.

The descriptions of genera and subgenera and keys to the species are supported by concise chapters on morphological characters, mosquitoes as vectors of arboviruses, methods for collecting, rearing and preservation and biology.

There is also a synoptic systematic list and geographic distribution table, while the extensive references should prove a valuable source of information and further reading on all topics related to mosquitoes.

The volume is designed for use by all concerned with mosquito identification, from the specialist biologist and medical officer to the health inspector and pest control operator.

It is also an indispensable reference work in any biological library.
