South African Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme: Call for applicants - 2011 intakeThe Department of Health, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of the National Health laboratory Services, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of Pretoria, are requesting applications for the South African Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (SAFELTP). This residency programme will be conducted over the course of 2 years and provide graduates with a Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Pretoria. The programme offers two areas of concentration, or “tracks": a field epidemiology track and a laboratory track. The course prepares professionals both from the public and the private health sectors for leadership roles in the management and improvement of public health care system, evaluation of health interventions and development of health surveillance systems. The SAFELTP is a full time, 2 year course and will start in January 2011. Bursaries/stipends will be available for South African applicants fulfilling predefined criteria. Limited places are available for applicants from public health organizations from countries within the region (including Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia, Zambia and Malawi). Applicants from these countries should typically be nominated by their respective health ministries and should be able to obtain study leave on full sponsorship (including salary/stipend, accommodation and transport) for the duration of the course. The SAFELTP will cover the university fees (registration and tuition fees) and provide the required books for all successful candidates. Key competency requirements:
