Short Courses


In addition to the regular curriculum, we also offer a series of short courses on an ad-hoc basis. Following is a list of courses. Check back periodically for upcoming course dates.

Outbreak Investigation and Response (Epidemiology Track)
This course is designed to develop skills in Field Epidemiology, which focuses on early detection of outbreaks and implementation of control measures in the field.

Outbreak Investigation and Response (Laboratory Track)
This course aims to strengthen outbreak detection and response through integration of the existing laboratory services with communicable diseases control activities in South Africa and improving the quality of microbiology laboratory testing.

Supervision and Mentoring in the Field
This training teaches mentoring and supervision to experts in the fields of laboratory and epidemiology who are expected to provide mentoring for field projects of the short courses. It addresses both technical and management issues that might be encountered by participants while they are in the field and how they might be best addressed.

Laboratory Quality Management Systems
This course provides training in the purpose, implementation, and evaluation of laboratory quality management systems.

Quality Management Systems for HIV Testing
This course consists of content presented through a variety of teaching methods to illustrate the performance of HIV rapid tests, and how to systematically assure the accuracy and reliably of testing following a quality systems approach.

Disease Surveillance
This course introduces the student to all the components of a surveillance system, how to design such a system as well as evaluate and improve an existing system.
