Supervision and Mentoring in the Field



Course description

Supervision and mentoring of training participants is the critical link to transferring skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to the workplace. This training teaches mentoring and supervision to experts in the fields of laboratory and epidemiology. It addresses both technical and management issues that might be encountered by participants while they are in the field and how they might be best addressed.
The course consists of content and examples presented through lecture, demonstration, group discussion and role-play. These methods are used to illustrate and practice information related to how to systematically review a participant’s surveillance activities, research protocols, and elements of a field investigation. Managing common obstacles encountered in the field and strategies for implementing public health recommendations is also covered during the course.

Course goals

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • Provide technical advice and recommendations to a public health professional who is conducting an emergency epidemiological investigation
  • Mentor a public health professional who is analyzing surveillance and/or laboratory data
  • Assist a public health professional with the development of a research protocol related to an outbreak investigation or other emergency epidemiological event
  • Work with a public health professional to overcome obstacles that might be encountered in the field or when advocating for the implementation of recommendations

Target audience

Participants of this course should consist of experts in the field of epidemiology and laboratory management who can dedicate a percentage of their time to supervise and mentor participants of other courses within the SAFELTP.
