What is Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD)?

Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) is a rare but severe form of Ebola virus disease caused by Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), one of the species within the genus Orthoebolavirus. The virus was first identified during an outbreak in Bundibugyo District, Uganda, in 2007, which resulted in more than 130 confirmed and probable cases and at least 40 deaths. Subsequent outbreaks have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including a large outbreak in Équateur Province in 2012, contributing to a cumulative total of several hundred reported cases across all known outbreaks. Like other Ebola viruses, Bundibugyo virus is believed to have a zoonotic origin, with spillover from infected wildlife (particularly specific species of bats) to humans, followed by person-to-person transmission through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, contaminated materials, or infected deceased individuals during caregiving and burial practices.
