The NICD is an expert advisory body which provides specialist advice during outbreak situations, as well as offering laboratory support where required. Technical support is offered for all aspects surrounding communicable disease outbreaks, nationwide, South Africa. Special emphasis is placed on optimising the available laboratory services during outbreak events.

The NICD work in close collaboration with the Provincial and National Departments of Health to detect and report timeously on communicable disease outbreaks. Close partnerships are also held with the NHLS diagnostic laboratories and along with the reference units from the NICD. The NICD aims to deliver laboratory diagnostic services and specialised testing during outbreaks.
