Overview

The NICD offers a variety of training programmes in the different areas of public health, including Field Epidemiology Training. The NICD is a valuable resource available to all South African universities and provides training for medical registrars, intern medical scientists and intern medical technologists in public health-oriented communicable diseases. The NICD in addition, offer opportunities to train in unique settings such as the biosafety level 3 and 4 laboratories.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN FIELD EPIDEMIOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAMME (SAFETP)

Field Epidemiology Training Programmes (FETP) have been established in over 55 countries globally. These programs are based on the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2-year residency training program in applied epidemiology, which commenced in the 1950’s.

MEDICAL SCIENTIST INTERN TRAINING PROGRAMME

The NICD is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South (HPCSA) to train Medical Scientist Interns in the following categories/disciplines: Microbiology, Virology and Molecular Biology.

THREE-WEEK COMMUNICABLE DISEASES ROTATION

To expose senior microbiology, virology, clinical pathology, public health or infectious disease registrars or specialists to essential knowledge about communicable disease diagnosis, surveillance and outbreak response functions;

Intensive courses in mycology and parasitology

Prepares microbiology, clinical pathology, public health or infectious disease specialists to understand and efficiently access the reference laboratory and epidemiology resources of the NICD.

NICD Intensive Mycology Course for NHLS Laboratory Staff

Helps NHLS members gain a better understanding of yeast and mould identification, improve mycology PTS performance and acquire a better perspective on yeast AFST

Virology Rotation Course

Increases knowledge in virology by covering the management and diagnostics of viral hemorrhagic fevers, arboviral diseases, influenza, novel respiratory viruses, vaccines for preventable diseases like measles and polio, HIV diagnostics and prevention, and enteric viral diseases.
