Shigellosis is a highly contagious diarrhoeal disease caused by a group of bacteria called Shigella. Person-to-person spread is the commonest mode of infection, although contaminated food or water may also cause infection or outbreaks. Children aged 1-4 years in low- and middle-income countries are most commonly affected, but travelers, men who have sex with men and people with weakened immune systems are also at risk. Shigellosis is usually self-limiting, but severe disease may be associated with complications. Shigella bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antimicrobials globally. International travel can facilitate the introduction of antimicrobial-resistant Shigella into new populations.
