This report is based on data collected up to 13 September 2026 (week 37 of 2026)  

Highlights

Measles Surveillance

  • National measles surveillance has detected an increase in measles cases nationwide. Data available (accessed 16 September 2026) from 29 December 2025 to 13 September 2026 (ISO Weeks 1-37) indicated that 5037 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported nationally. Since the previous report (ISO week 37), 458 additional cases were detected. Northern Cape reported the highest number of new cases (115), followed by Free State (80), Limpopo (56), Western Cape (53), North West (49), Mpumalanga (35), Gauteng (34), KwaZulu-Natal (28), and Eastern Cape (8).

Rubella Surveillance

  • Between 29 December 2025 and 13 September 2026 (ISO Weeks 1–36), a total of 595 laboratory-confirmed rubella cases were reported in South Africa through the national fever-rash surveillance system (data accessed 16 September 2026). Since the previous report, 13 additional rubella cases have been reported up to week 36.
