Measles and Rubella Weekly Surveillance Report

This report is based on data collected up to 23 August 2026 (week 34 of 2026)  

Highlights

Measles Surveillance

  • National measles surveillance has detected an increase in measles cases nationwide. Data available (accessed 27 August 2026) from 29 December 2025 to 23 August 2026 (ISO Weeks 1-34) indicated that 4,063 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported nationally. Since the previous report (ISO week 33), 172 additional cases were detected. The Western Cape reported the highest number of new cases (35), followed by Northern Cape (34), Limpopo (23), Free State (20), Mpumalanga (15), Gauteng (15), North West (14), Eastern Cape (12), and KwaZulu-Natal (4).

Rubella Surveillance

  • Between 29 December 2025 and 23 August 2026 (ISO Weeks 1–34), a total of 496 laboratory-confirmed rubella cases were reported in South Africa through the national fever-rash surveillance system (data accessed 27 August 2026). Since the previous report, 16 new rubella cases have been reported.
