Measles and Rubella Weekly Surveillance Report

This report is based on data collected up to 10 May 2026 (week 19 of 2026)  

Highlights

Measles Surveillance

  • National measles surveillance has detected an increase in measles cases nationwide. Data available (accessed 13 May 2026) from 29 December 2025 to 10 May 2026 (ISO Weeks 1-19) indicated that 1560 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported nationally. In the previous two weeks, the Western Cape reported the highest number of new cases (80), followed by Free State (48), the Eastern Cape (44), Gauteng (31), Mpumalanga (26), Limpopo (13), Northern Cape (9), KwaZulu-Natal (4) and North West (2).

Rubella Surveillance

  • Between 29 December 2025 and 10 May 2026 (ISO Weeks 1–19), a total of 269 laboratory-confirmed rubella cases were reported in South Africa through the national fever-rash surveillance system (data accessed 13 May 2026). This represents a decline compared with the same period in 2025.
